Introducing Kids to Model Train Collecting

Collecting model trains was a great hobby back that boomed in the 60s and waned slowly down to the 90s. While many do not collect model trains today, there are still few people who try to get their children addicted to such endeavor. Most of these people give model trains as presents, especially during Christmas and birthdays.

However, rubbing the said habit off to kids these days can be a handful endeavor. Children are now hooked to video games and only come out if there is a new game on sale. Still, getting them to start model train collecting is worth all the effort, especially if really hook them in.

If you are bent to getting a kid to start with model trains, the first thing you need to do is provide him or her with a train that correspond to his age. You can bring the child to a toy store or a hobby booth and give him the freedom to pick his first train. Remember though that you need to start small and play with the age range accordingly.

This process also do great in reverse. If you have a 12-year old kid, do not give him with a model train that is designed for seven year olds. Pretty much, they know what they want so let them handle themselves when picking their first model trains and start their model train collection.

Leave the bulk of designing and layout planning to the kid when setting up the train tracks. Having said that, you must also be ready to fill in and help them with technical matters. This might be a bumpy point in teaching kids to start a model train collection since what you think might not go with what they want. Just be patient and help them when they need it.

After finalizing the layout and the schematics, it is best that you let them build the whole model from the start. That said, you should be ready to give pointers as well. Enhancing their imagination is one way of spiking their interest. You can do this by giving them some history on trains. You can tell them stories as well as videos showing old trains.

Another great thing to keep them interested is by relating to them any personal accounts you might have about trains. Telling them stories can really get them hooked to the hobby. Before you know it, your kid has already amassed a large model train collection on his own.
