Most model train enthusiasts started out with a model train set given to them as a gift when they were children. If you are thinking about getting a model trainset either for yourself or to give to a young person you might feel a bit overwhelmed when see all the different train sets available. There is quite a variety of different model train sets to choose from and they come in several different scales, different sizes of layout, shapes, and even colors so you could well find yourself confused about which would be best so I will list a few things you might want to look out for in a first train set.
How Big Should The Train Set Be? How much space do you have?
Before you do anything else you need to think about where you will have the model train set and how much space is available for it. All proper model train sets have scales associated with them and these represent how big they are compared to the real thing. This allows you to mix and match different manufacturers products so long as they are made to the same scale size. The standard for most model train collectors is the HO scale where the track width is about the width of a mans thumb. HO provides a lot of detail on the locomotives and freight cars but if you have more limited space you might prefer the N scale trains which are a lot smaller and you can fit a much more comprehensive layout into the same space. Anyone with lots of spare room might want to go with the O scale model train sets which are large and have an superb detailing of nuts, bolts and rvets on the locomotives. Generally speaking, you will find that O scale model train sets do come out rather more expensive than some of the smaller model train guages but if you can afford the money and space required these make great model train sets and they have some wonderful scale model buildings and accessories to go with the trains.
Essential Items You Need
You can either buy a complete package as a complete model train set or purchase all the items you need individualy. Having a complete train set in one package keeps things simple and should give you everything you need to get you started but it will probably only contain the basics. On the other hand if you decide to purchase a model train set of exactly what you want you can select all the individual parts and this means you get to choose which type of locomotive and cars you have. So long as you stick with the same scale, or train guage, you will be able to add lots more track and features later if you wish.
Useful Extra Features
When purchasing your model train set make sure the train set is DCC enabled. DCC enabled trains allow you to operate other model train sets at the same time without complications. It may not seem too important right now but later if you decide to expand your train set this will be a very handy feature to have.
Take a good look around at what is available before you buy your model train set. Your local train or hobby store will be very useful when it comes to buying accessories in the future but to start out check the internet to see what types of model train sets are available. The internet is a great place to do your research to find out what different types of model train sets are available to purchase.
Your local model train store will be a great place to go to meet up with fellow enthusiasts and to ask for tips and advice so they deserve your support. You may find that speaking to the owner of a local store will get you extra discounts to match prices you find online. You can check out the model train sets and talk model trains with the sales staff and get a much better idea of what you are looking for.
Some general hobby stores may have some model train sets but your best bet is to visit a specialized model trains store where they will be far more knowledgeable about the hobby. They will be better equipped to answer any even the most obscure model trains questions and get you started in the right direction on your new hobby.
