Model Train Options

It is remarkable how accurately model trains are produced with the detail of the original engines and rolling stock.

The first model trains date back to 1891, in Germany where Marklin first introduced a full range of model trains. The trains were available in three different scales and were base on toy train models that had been produced previously.

The Lionel model trains were introduced in 1901, by Joshua Cowen. Later they would come to dominate the model train market in the United States.

Other companies soon followed bringing out their own lines such as American Flyer, Marx, and Ives.

Lionel was the first company to realize the importance of making model trains that anyone of any age could play with or collect so they decided to make wooden trains for ages 4 to 6, progressing to the S scale, G scale, and the HO scale, for children up to eight years old.

It is not unusual for this hobby to carry over into adulthood and the only thing that changes is the size and quantity of trains that an adult will collect.

There is a wide selection of different scales of model trains to choose from which allows you to accommodate your space, personal preference, and budget. The Z-Scale has a ratio of 1:220. Great for limited space, extremely detailed and small.

N-Scale has a ratio of 1:160. This is the second smallest scale; it allows you to add scenery and has longer train models.

HO-Scale has a ratio of 1:87. This is the most sought after train model. It has an unlimited amount of tracks, trains, buildings, cars, and scenery to choose from. It has good detail and does not require much space to set up in.

S-Scale has a ratio of 1:64. While larger than the Ho, it’s a great model if you have lots of room, made by American Flyer.

O-Scale has a ratio of 1:48. This is a great choice for younger children. It is easy to handle and is made by Lionel.

G-Scale has a ratio of 1d:22.5. If you’re looking for a garden set up, this is the one for you. Manufacturers that make the G-Scale model train are L.G.B, Bachmann, and Aristo-Craft.

To have a properly working model train set, you need to obtain an engine and a few train cars to hook up to it. You will have your choice of a wide variety of freight or passenger cars that you can add to your engine and in order to complete your model train set you will need to build a track. Depending on your needs and preferences, you should choose a train track that is the right type and size for you.

Transformers are used to supply electricity to your train. Once you have purchased all the necessary parts to enable your model train to run properly you can then add to your collection with accessories such as buildings, signals, tunnels, people, trees and other forms of scenery.

Collecting model trains can be a very rewarding and enjoyable hobby. With imagination and an endless supplies of train models and accessories, you can create a model train world that is exactly how you imagine a railroad should be run.
